The zebra demonstrates the beauty in individuality. The zebra's distinctive stripes are camouflage against predators unable to pick out an individual from the herd. But for herd members, the unique stripe patterns have the opposite effect: they identify individuals. So the zebra represents the power to maintain our individuality in group settings and also to be supportive members of our communities. Zebras are either white with black stripes, or black with white stripes. These stripes are typically vertical on the head, neck, and main body, with horizontal stripes at the rear and on the legs of the animal. Some ancient African cultures believed zebras were sent by the spirit of lightning and rain to remind people that time changes; seasons of abundance might become droughts; and that black can't exist without white and vice versa. back
